Under the impetus of the Japanese Presidency, and with the support of France (Permanent Secretariat) and the Belgian Presidency of the European Union, the Leading Group organised a side event on Innovative Financing for Development on 21 September 2010, on the sidelines of the UN Summit on the MDGs.
Bringing together numerous dignitaries committed to innovative financing for development, this event welcomed over 500 people from national delegations, international organizations, foundations and NGOs.
The three co-organising countries presented a declaration promoting a financial transaction tax for development, which was supported by Norway, Spain and Brazil and warmly welcomed by the Leading Group. Spain, represented by its Minister of Foreign Affairs, put forward its candidacy for presidency of the Leading Group.
